Susan Palmer joined the University of South Carolina in August 2008 as associate dean for student affairs. Dean Palmer received her J.D., summa cum laude, from Washington and Lee University School of Law in 1985. At Washington and Lee she served as Editor-in-Chief of the Washington and Lee Law Review and was elected to the Order of the Coif and Omicron Delta Kappa. She received her B.A. in political science from Mary Baldwin College in 1982.
Following her graduation from Washington and Lee, Dean Palmer clerked for the Honorable Ellsworth A. Van Graafeiland of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. She worked for the Washington, DC law firm of Arent, Fox, Kintner, Plotkin & Kahn before returning to Washington and Lee as assistant dean, then associate dean for student affairs and admissions and adjunct professor of law. In 2002, Dean Palmer joined the University of Virginia School of Law faculty, where she was associate dean for admissions until coming to the University of South Carolina.
Dean Palmer has served in numerous roles with the Law School Admission Council, including as chair of the 2008 Annual Meeting and Educational Conference, two terms as a member of the Services and Programs Committee, two terms as a member of the Finance and Legal Affairs Committee, 1997 and 1999 chair of the Workshop for New Admission Professionals and Faculty, and as a frequent presenter at conferences and law school forums. She has served as a member of the Executive Committee and Chair of the Section on Pre-Legal Education and Admission to Law School of the Association of American Law Schools, and as a member of the Prelaw Committee of the Section on Legal Education of the American Bar Association.
