Your First Law School Assignment
Welcome to the Study of Law! A Message from the Legal Research & Writing Faculty
Welcome to the USC Law Class of 2014! The members of the Legal Research & Writing Faculty are looking forward to working with you this year. Please visit our website at law.sc.edu/lraw/ to see each of our homepages and to learn a bit more about the Legal Analysis, Research & Writing course.
To help you learn how to read and brief cases — which you'll need to do for the first days of class in several of your other courses — we've prepared a short lesson that's posted at law.sc.edu/lraw/assignment.pdf. The lesson consists of some reading about the court system and cases, and it ends with a case?briefing exercise. Please complete the lesson before Orientation so that you will arrive at the Law School prepared to handle your first case?reading assignments in all of your courses. Your Legal Writing Instructor can give you some feedback on the case?briefing exercise from the lesson, but you will not receive any kind of grade or score on it.
Studying law can be fascinating — and at times frustrating. We hope we can help you through the occasional frustration this year so that you can realize your potential as a law student and come to share our fascination with the law.
Enjoy the rest of your summer. We look forward to meeting you!
