1968

Chief Justice Jean Toal was appointed chair of the South Carolina Access to Justice Commission. The commission was created in recognition of the need to expand access to civil legal representation for people of low income and modest means in South Carolina. Toal was also named chairwoman of the board of directors of the National Center for State Courts and president of the Conference of Chief Justices, which represents the top judges in the U.S.

1974

Terry E. Richardson, Jr. and Rep. William F. “Bill” Cotty were also appointed to the South Carolina Access to Justice Commission.

Stanford E. Lacy, founder of Collins & Lacy, PC, has been selected for inclusion in the 25th anniversary edition of The Best Lawyers in America.

Circuit Judge Doyet A. "Jack" Early III was the keynote speaker for the Bamberg County Chamber of Commerce's annual banquet on October 16.

1975

Michael Bowers became a shareholder in the Charleston office of the Michael Wilkes Law Firm, PA, which has changed its name to Wilkes Bowers, PA

1976

Hugh McAngus of McAngus Goudelock & Courie, LLC was chosen for the 2008 Edition of The Best Lawyers of America.

Hon. Robert N. Jenkins, Sr. was appointed to the South Carolina Access to Justice Commission.

Elizabeth Van Doren Gray was named “Leader in Field” in general commercial litigation by Chambers USA in America’s Leading Business Lawyers (2007-2008).

Thornwell Sowell III was listed for the fourth year in Chambers USA in America’s Leading Business Lawyers (2007-2008).

1977

Robert E. Stepp was named “Leader in Field” in general commercial litigation by Chambers USA in America’s Leading Business Lawyers (2007-2008).

Barbara Barton will continue her practice as the Barton Law Firm, PA, which is the successor to Robinson, Barton, McCarthy, Calloway & Johnson, PA. The firm will continue in the same location, 1715 Pickens Street, Columbia, South Carolina, 29201.

David Fisher was named director of the BB&T Corporation’s Wealth Management Division in Winston-Salem, NC

Don Zelenka, Assistant deputy attorney general for the state Attorney General’s Office, was recognized by the U.S. Attorney General’s office with the Ernest F. Hollings Excellence in State Prosecution Award.

1978

Stuart M. Andrews, Jr. was appointed vice-chair of the South Carolina Access to Justice Commission.

1979

Justice Don Beatty was sworn in to the SC Supreme Court, the second black justice to serve on the S.C. Supreme Court since Reconstruction.

1980

Hon. John E. Waites was appointed to the South Carolina Access to Justice Commission.

Nancy C. Wicker was named Criminal Chief for the U.S Attorney’s office located at 1441 Main St., Ste. 500, Columbia 29201.

1981

Andrea E. Loney was appointed to the South Carolina Access to Justice Commission.

Sandra R. Parise was granted Fellowship in the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.

1983

Senator Wes Hayes was named a Legislator of the Year by the SC Solicitors’ Association presented at the SC Solicitors’ Association Conference.

Hon. Cordell J. Maddox, Jr. was appointed to the South Carolina Access to Justice Commission.

1984

Sandra J.P. Dennis was appointed the Deputy General Council for Healthcare Regulatory Affairs by The Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO). BIO represents more than 1,100 biotechnology companies, academic institutions, state biotechnology centers and related organizations across the United States and 31 other nations. BIO members are involved in the research and development of healthcare, agricultural, industrial and environmental biotechnology products.

1985

Doc Morgan of McAngus Goudelock & Courie, LLC, was chosen for the 2008 Edition of The Best Lawyers of America.

Sharon C. Bramlett was appointed Chairman, Council of Advisors on Consumer Agency, for the South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs.

1986

Rusty Goudelock of McAngus Goudelock & Courie, LLC was chosen for the 2008 Edition of The Best Lawyers of America. Gregory Harris, joined practice with former Assistant U.S. Attorney Johnny Gasser (USC Law 1987).

Pamela DeFanti Robinson was named Chair-Elect of the AALS Section on Pro Bono and Public Service Opportunities and a recipient of the Richland County CASA Lifetime Achievement Award

1987

Johnny Gasser, former Assistant U.S. Attorney, formed private law practice in Columbia with Greg Harris (USC Law 1986), longtime friend and veteran criminal defense lawyer.

J. Calhoun Watson was appointed to the South Carolina Access to Justice Commission.

1988

Patricia L. Harrison was appointed to the South Carolina Access to Justice Commission.

Daniel A. Saxon was named shareholder at Novit & Scarminach, PA, Hilton Head, SC.

1989

Hon. Deadra Jefferson was appointed to the South Carolina Access to Justice Commission.

E. Hood Temple was appointed to the Medical University of South Carolina Board of Visitors. Members are nominated by the trustees of the university and serve as ambassadors in their respective regions. Temple was appointed by Dr. Donald R. Johnson II.

J. Pamela Price has announced the opening of The Price Law Firm in Columbia, SC.

1990

Sarah L. Clingman joined the firm of Sherrill Roof Millender LLP located at 1122 Lady St. in Columbia 29211.

Rick Hubbard, Deputy solicitor for the 11th Judicial Circuit, general sessions court, was recognized by the U.S. Attorney General’s office with the Ernest F. Hollings Excellence in State Prosecution Award.

Kevin F. McDonald was named First Assistant U.S. Attorney; Distict of South Carolina located at 1441 Main St., Ste. 500, Columbia 29201.

1991

William K. Witherspoon was named Senior Litigation Counsel for the U.S Attorney’s office located at 1441 Main St., Ste. 500, Columbia 29201.

Michael D. Hamrick joined The Palmetto Bank in Spartanburg.

1992

Rosalyn W. Frierson was appointed to the South Carolina Access to Justice Commission.

A. Jackson Barnes was named “Leader in Field” in general commercial litigation and “Up and Coming Lawyer” by Chambers USA in America’s Leading Business Lawyers (2007-2008).

Robert F. Daley was named Narcotics and Violent Crime Section Chief for the U.S Attorney’s office located at 1441 Main St., Ste. 500, Columbia 29201.

1993

Frances S. Griggs joined Howden Buffalo Inc. as General Counsel with offices located at 2029 W. DeKalb St., Camden 29020.

Monica Gilroy delivered the keynote address at the Georgia Department of Banking and Finance's statewide conference in Savannah for banking and finance examiners.

Lori Unumb and her cable TV show, “The Law with Professor Lori,” won the South Carolina Cable Television Association’s 2007 Golden Palmetto Award for “Excellence in Local Origination.”

1994

Allyson Haynes was promoted to associate professor for the Charleston School of Law.

1996

Senator Vincent Sheheen was named a Legislator of the Year by the SC Solicitors’ Association presented at the SC Solicitors’ Association Conference and appointed to the South Carolina Access to Justice Commission.

1997

Swati S. Patel was appointed to the South Carolina Access to Justice Commission.

1998

David M. Wilkerson was named council member of the 2007-08 South Carolina Bar Consumer Law Section. The section promotes a greater understanding among Bar members and the general public about consumer law issues. The section also works with the Department of Consumer Affairs and legal service entities on issues affecting debtors’ rights and monitors proposed legislation.

1999

Katherine E. Graham became an associate of Tupper, Grimsley and Dean, PA located at 611 Bay St., Beaufort, SC 29901.

Elinor V. Lister became an associate of The Law Firm of Lister, Flynn & Kelly, PA in Spartanburg, SC.

2001

Rangely B. Chewning was appointed to the South Carolina Access to Justice Commission.

Ann Goulding joined the Charleston office of McAngus Goudelock & Courie LLC practicing workers' compensation defense. Previously, she clerked for Judge Howard P. King of the 3rd Judicial Circuit and practiced civil litigation.

Joseph DuBois joined the Mount Pleasant office of Buist Byars & Taylor LLC as an associate attorney.

2004

Joseph E. Thoensen joined Richardson Plowden & Robinson, PA as an associate in its general litigation practice area.

S. Jahue Moore Jr. became an associate of Moore, Taylor, and Thomas, PA in Columbia, S.C.

Michael D. Routzong became Assistant Public Defender for the Aiken County Public Defender's Office located at 410 Barnwell Ave., NW, Aiken, S.C. 29801.

Jason Greenwood joined the Washington D.C. office of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough in the firm's litigation practice. He will focus on civil litigation matters and representing clients before federal regulatory agencies.

Rachel Denise North-Coombes married Alexander Harold Chaplin in June, 2007.

Amy L. Neuschafer became an associate of the Collins & Lacy firm located at 1330 Lady Street, Columbia, S.C. 29201.

Joel Steve Hughes married Allison Elizabeth Curry in June 2007.

Timothy Ryan Langley has become as associate of Hodge Law, P.C. located at 229 Magnolia St., Spartanburg, S.C. 29306.

Mary Madison Brittain married Andrew Corry on October 6, 2007. She is a law clerk to the Honorable Kaye G. Hearn, Chief Judge of the South Carolina Court of Appeals.

John Daniel Jones is engaged to marry Virginia Thornton. The wedding is planned for December 15, 2007

Jenna Micklash has joined McAngus Goudelock & Courie, LLC’s Columbia office. Her practice focuses on the area of workers’ compensation defense.

1949

Lucius Arthur (L.A.) Hutson, Jr. died August 5, 2007 in Charlotte, NC.

1954

John Travis Bodenheimer of Aiken died August 18, 2007.

1960

Judge Bobby M. Pruitt, 75, of Spartanburg, died Sunday, October 7, 2007, at his home. Born April 29, 1932, in Union, SC, he was the class president of the USC School of Law in 1960. He served as a page for the S.C. Legislature 1959-60. Judge Pruitt was a member of the S.C. State Legislature 1963-65, the S.C. Bar Association 1960-2007, president emeritus of the Spartanburg Bar Association, and a retired Spartanburg Municipal Court judge with 30 years of service.

1963

James Otis Dunn passed away in June, 2007 in Myrtle Beach, SC.

1971

Gene Wallace Dukes Sr., 64, of St. George died suddenly in his home in August 2007.

1974

Willard Montgomery “Monty” Hines, Jr died at his home in Richland, Washington.
