1959

Greenville attorney G. Dewey Oxner, Jr. will be installed as a member of the South Carolina Bar Board of Governors on Thursday, May 8, during the Bar's House of Delegates meeting at Francis Marion University in Florence. He will serve as the Board's Senior Lawyers Division representative. A trial lawyer for more than 40 years, Oxner is a recognized leader in the fields of malpractice defense and products liability and has successfully tried more than 100 malpractice cases.

1974

Michael Todd "Toddy" Smith, formerly of Gottlieb & Smith, joined McNair as of counsel. His practice areas include real estate, timber and logging law, forestry law and general business transactions.

1975

Darlington attorney Robert L. Kilgo, Jr. will be installed as the 2008-09 treasurer of the South Carolina Bar on Thursday, May 8, during the Bar's House of Delegates meeting at Francis Marion University in Florence. Kilgo practices criminal law in Darlington.

1977

Charleston attorney Alice F. Paylor will be installed as chair of the South Carolina Bar House of Delegates on Thursday, May 8, during the Bar's House of Delegates meeting at Francis Marion University in Florence. Paylor is the managing partner of the law firm of Rosen, Rosen & Hagood, LLC, where she practices in the areas of complex commercial litigation, employment litigation and school law.

1979

Greenville attorney Anne S. Ellefson was recently elected managing director of Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd. She succeeds the Columbia office's Steve A. Matthews, who has served as managing director of the firm since 2004. Ellefson's real estate practice involves representing owners and developers in commercial real estate transactions.

1985

Myrtle Beach attorney Kathryn M. (Kif) Cook will be installed as a member of the South Carolina Bar Board of Governors on Thursday, May 8, during the Bar's House of Delegates meeting at Francis Marion University in Florence. Cook practices in the area of civil litigation and real estate development and is the senior partner in Cook & Roy, LLC.

1990

Kris Cato, an attorney with McAngus Goudelock & Courie, has become a certified mediator. Cato leads the firm's employment law practice group. She is certified by the S.C. Supreme Court as a specialist in labor and employment law. Cato handles all aspects of employment contracts, wage/hour, affirmative action, union avoidance and campaigns, non-compete contracts, employment discrimination and unemployment compensation. She also practices in the area of business immigration law, assisting employers with obtaining temporary visas for employees to work in the United States.

Robinson, McFadden & Moore, PC announces that Wilson W. McDonald has become Of Counsel to the firm located at 1901 Main St., Ste. 1200, Columbia 29201.

The S.C. Department of Education announces that Shelly Bezanson Kelly has become General Counsel to the agency located at 1429 Senate St., Columbia 29201.

1992

Rosen, Rosen & Hagood, LLC announces that Daniel F. (Frank) Blanchard III and has become a member of the firm located at 134 Meeting St., Ste. 200, Charleston 29401.

John Emerson has been hired as the Charleston County School Board's new staff attorney. Emerson practices in Nexsen Pruet's Columbia office as a part of the employment and labor law group and the business litigation group. He has been certified as a specialist in employment and labor law by the South Carolina Supreme Court.

1993

Hagood & Kerr, PA announces that Perrin Q. Dargan III has joined the firm located at 654 Coleman Blvd., Ste. 100, Mt. Pleasant 29464.

1994

Columbia attorney Carl Solomon will be installed as the 2008-09 secretary of the South Carolina Bar on Thursday, May 8, during the Bar's House of Delegates meeting at Francis Marion University in Florence. Solomon is a partner in the firm of Gergel, Nickles and Solomon, PA, practicing in the area of complex litigation including catastrophic injury, pharmaceutical litigation, products liability and wrongful death.

Nancy K. Tracy has joined Clawson & Staubes LLC practicing residential and commercial real estate transactions. Previously she was research editor of the ABA Real Property, Probate and Trust Journal and a law clerk for Judge John W. Kittredge.

1996

The S.C. Department of Education announces that Karla McLawhorn Hawkins has become Deputy General Counsel to the agency located at 1429 Senate St., Columbia 29201.

1997

Martin Driggers Jr., a partner in Sweeny, Wingate & Barrow's Hartsville office, has been named to the South Carolina Bar's inaugural Leadership Academy, a part of its Young Lawyers Division. The academy was designed to educate lawyers who have practiced fewer than seven years. It is an effort by the Bar to encourage young lawyers to be leaders in their profession and communities.

C. Frederick Shipley IV, PC announces that its name has been changed to Shipley & Hayes, PC and that Tressa Hayes has become a shareholder in the firm located at 445 Meeting St., W. Columbia 29169.

1998

Shannon L. Felder of Felder Law Firm, LLC announces the opening of the firm's Grand Strand office, located at 1201 Creel St., Ste. 100, Conway 29526.

1999

The S.C. Bar Law Related Education (LRE) Division awarded the 2008 LRE Lawyer of the Year Award to Holly Wall of Johnsonville.

Assistant U.S. Attorney William Walter Wilkins III of Greenville has been nominated by President Bush to be the U.S. Attorney for South Carolina.

Wilkins was recommended to the White House by both of South Carolina's Republican U.S. senators, Jim DeMint of Greenville and Lindsey Graham of Seneca. Wilkins has been an assistant U.S. attorney in the Justice Department's Greenville office since January 2005

2001

Rosen, Rosen & Hagood, LLC announces that A. Bright Ariail has become a member of the firm located at 134 Meeting St., Ste. 200, Charleston 29401.

Pritchard & Elliott, LLC announces that John C. Hayes IV has joined the firm as special counsel located at 8 Cumberland St., Ste. 200, Charleston 29401.

2003

Columbia attorney Ginny Nissen Waller has been named Young Lawyer of the Year by the South Carolina Bar Young Lawyers Division (YLD). The Young Lawyer of the Year Award is given annually to recognize a young lawyer who most exemplifies excellence in practicing law and public service. She served as president of Women in Law, a member of the Pro Bono Board, associate justice of administration for the Moot Court Bar and articles editor of the American Bar Association's Real Property, Probate & Trust Journal. Upon graduation, Waller served as law clerk to the Hon. Steven H. John of the 15th Judicial Circuit, staff attorney with the S.C. Court of Appeals and law clerk to the Hon. Jasper M. Cureton of the S.C. Court of Appeals. She then spent two years in private practice before deciding to apply her law degree outside of the traditional practice setting. In addition, the Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands announces that Genevieve N. Waller has become the Director of Development with offices located at 3700 Forest Dr., Ste. 350, Columbia 29204.

2004

Sallie S. Holder has returned to the Greenville office of Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart as an associate, limiting her practice to labor and employment law. Holder concentrates her practice in management-side employment litigation, including defending against employee claims of employment discrimination, retaliation, harassment, wrongful discharge and breach of employment contracts. A recipient of the "Young Professional of the Year" award from the Greenville Chamber of Commerce, Holder served as a member of the Southeastern Environmental Law Journal while in law school.

Ellis, Lawhorne & Sims, P.A., has announced Page M. Kalish has joined the Firm as an associate attorney in the Litigation and Dispute Resolution Practice Group.

Tara Anne Coleman and Everett Guy Ballenger, both of Florence, were married at 6 p.m. Saturday, May 3, 2008, at Pamplico United Methodist Church in Pamplico. He is employed by Ballenger, Barth and Hoefer in Florence.

2005

Pennington Law Firm, LLP announces that Tiffany M. Melchers has joined the firm located at 1501 Main St., Ste. 600, Columbia 29201.

2006

Florence attorney Suzanne Jebaily has joined Jebaily Law Firm as an associate practicing in the areas of workers' compensation, Social Security and appellate advocacy. She was a member of the student editorial board of the Real Property, Probate and Trust Journal and recipient of the Irving Steinberg Workers' Compensation Award while in law school.

2007

David E. Massey announces that Summer C. Tompkins has become an associate of the firm located at 3813 N. Main St., Columbia 29203.

In Memoriam

1956

J. Reese Daniel, 83, formerly of Columbia, died Friday, May 9, 2008. During this time in law school, he was a member of Phi Delta Phi International legal fraternity, Wig and Robe Honor Society and Law Review. He was in active practice, first in Columbia and then in Pawleys Island until 1990.

1972

Attorney Paul Warren Nevill, 62, of Bluffton, S.C., died May 12, 2008, in Savannah after a short illness. Nevill recently retired from his law practice of real estate and advocacy for the disabled.

1974

Allen Randolph Garris, 59, of Lake View, passed away in the early morning on April 30, 2008. He practiced law and farmed in Dillon County.

1987

Jeanette McFee Kellerman, 55, died Tuesday, April 29, 2008. She was licensed to practice in South Carolina and admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court.
