1947

The Ernest F. "Fritz" Hollings Collection is open to research, in conjunction with the publication of his new book, Making Government Work, by the USC Press. His novel is a "convincing compendium of hard-won lessons from a tested agent of change; an instructive guide to the fortitude, compassion and stewardship needed by successful public servants; and a timely call to action for those eager to make government work again in the interests of all Americans."

1967

William W. "Billy" Wilkins, Ronald Reagan's first selection to the federal bench in the nation and the former Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, has joined Nexsen Pruet as a Partner. He will lead the firm's White-Collar Crime, Appellate Advocacy, and Corporate Compliance/Crisis Management practice groups and actively participate in the firm's Business Litigation Group. Judge Wilkins will be based in the firm's Greenville, S.C., office.

1968

The American Bar Association Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section will honor Jean Hoefer Toal, chief justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court, with the Pursuit of Justice Award, which recognizes lawyers and judges who have shown outstanding merit and excelled at ensuring access to justice.

Collins & Lacy, PC is pleased to announce that Joel W. Collins and Gray T. Culbreath have been selected for inclusion in the 2009 edition of The Best Lawyers in America. Joel Collins was honored for his work in White Collar Criminal Defense. 1976

Fisher & Phillips LLP announced that Jonathan Pearson, managing partner of the Columbia office, was featured in Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business in 2008. His practice emphasizes employment litigation of all types before state and federal courts, as well as traditional labor law.

1979

Charleston attorney Timothy W. Bouch will serve a one-year term as chair of the American Bar Association's tort and trial insurance practice section. Bouch is managing partner at Leath, Bouch & Crawford, where his practice areas include environmental law, construction law and corporate litigation. Before earning his J.D., Bouch was a lieutenant commander in the Navy and Navy Reserve. A 1979 graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law, he was vice chair of the ABA's TIPS and toxic torts and environmental law committee in 2007-2008. He is past chair of the environmental litigation section and was a member of the ABA standing committee on professional discipline, among other affiliations. In South Carolina, Bouch was a member of the Bar's House of Delegates from 1998-2006. He also chaired the S.C. Supreme Court Commission on the Rules of Professional Conduct and teaches ethics and professional responsibility at the Charleston School of Law.

1984

City Solicitor and Staff Attorney Richard Pearce has been named the new assistant city manager, according to City Manager Roger LeDuc. Along with assisting LeDuc, Pearce will oversee the City's Inspections Division and other special assignment projects. Pearce has served as the City solicitor and staff attorney since 1998. After working with a private law firm for several years, he began work as a lobbyist to the South Carolina Legislature, and as the assistant public services director for the South Carolina Bar.

1986

The United Way of Central Carolinas announced Monday the names of the members of a review panel charged with investigating what led to approval of a $2 million retirement package for its former CEO. A. Todd Brown, partner in the law firm of Hunton & Williams in its Charlotte office, is a member of the review panel. His legal practice includes a concentration in labor and employment matters. He is current Vice President of the Mecklenburg County Bar and co-chair of its Special Committee on Diversity.

1987

William Floyd III, an employment and labor attorney in Nexsen Pruet's Columbia office, will serve on the 2008-2009 Board of Directors of the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce. Floyd has twenty years of experience counseling employers on a broad range of labor issues (such as arbitrations, collective bargaining, unfair labor practice charges and union campaigns) and employment issues (such as wrongful termination lawsuits, employment discrimination claims, and employee benefits litigation). Floyd was officially elected at a Board meeting on September 16th in Columbia.

1988

Fisher & Phillips LLP announced that Michael Carrouth, partner, was featured in Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business in 2008. He represents management exclusively and concentrates his practice in the areas of union avoidance, union campaigns, labor relations, employment litigation, discrimination cases, litigation involving non-compete agreements and wrongful discharge cases.

1989

Seventh Judicial Circuit Solicitor Trey Gowdy is earning national recognition for his work on capital cases. The veteran prosecutor of Spartanburg and Cherokee counties was recognized August 22 at the 29th Annual Summer Conference of the Association of Government Attorneys in San Francisco. The award cites outstanding advocacy on the challenging caseload.

C. Mitchell Brown, a partner with Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough, has been elected to join The American Academy of Appellate Lawyers. The academy, founded in 1990, recognizes outstanding appellate lawyers and promotes the improvement of advocacy and administration of the appellate courts. Membership is by invitation only.

The South Carolina Law Review has selected Elizabeth Scott Moïse as the 2008 South Carolina Law Review Alumna of the Year. Moïse is a partner of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP in Charleston, South Carolina, where she currently practices in the areas of litigation, product liability defense, and insurance coverage and bad faith. Since 1992, she has also taught as an adjunct professor of legal writing at the University of South Carolina School of Law. Moïse served on the South Carolina Law Review and became only the second woman to be elected Editor in Chief of the South Carolina Law Review. She was a member of the John Belton O'Neall Inn of Court and was awarded the Claud M. Sapp Award for leadership, scholarship, and industry. Moïse is the co-author of the Product Liability chapter of the South Carolina Practice Manual and co-author of The Law of Automobile Insurance in South Carolina, third, fourth, and fifth editions.

1991

Southwestern Oregon Community College has named Richard Weldon as Vice President of Administrative Services and Chief Fiscal Officer. Weldon has held a variety of top level administrative posts at Coastal Carolina University near Myrtle Beach, S.C., most recently as Vice President for Administration and Finance. Weldon has overseen a wide array of administrative services and financial functions at Coastal Carolina, including accounting operations, budgeting, procurement, public safety, facilities planning and management and business operations.

1995

Fisher & Phillips LLP announced that J. Hagood Tighe, partner, was featured in Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business in 2008. Tighe practices exclusively in the area of labor and employment law, representing management in union campaigns and employment litigation.

Leadership South Carolina would like to announce Hamilton Russell, II of Nelson Mullins Riley and Scarborough, LLP as a member of its Class of 2009. 1997

Letitia Verdin has practiced law for 11 years as a prosecutor in Greenville. Recently, the South Carolina State Legislature elected Verdin, who now resides in Greenville, as a family court judge.

Sowell Gray Stepp & Laffitte attorneys Grady L. Beard, Marcy J. Lamar (c/o 1998), and Daniel W. Hayes have co-authored the fifth edition of The Law of Workers' Compensation Insurance in South Carolina. Passage of the Workers' Compensation Reform Act of 2007 required extensive coverage in the new edition, which includes discussion of the elimination of the Second Injury Fund, stricter guidelines for repetitive-trauma and stress/mental claims, the addition of new scheduled members and important changes in filing requirements. The new edition also covers case law through May 2008.

2000

Anna Rodman Snelling and Eric Michael Gluse were united in holy matrimony July 26, 2008, at 12 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church. Snelling is employed by South Carolina Bank & Trust.

Rick Reames, a partner in Nexsen Pruet's Columbia office, has been selected as chairman of the South Carolina Bar's tax section for 2008-2009. Reames focuses his practice on trusts and estates planning and administration, state and local taxation and general transactional law. He earned his LL.M. in taxation from New York University School of Law.

2001

2002

F. Miles Adler announces the opening of the Adler Law Firm, LLC located at 241A Willbrook Blvd., Ste. 200, P.O. Box 4743, Pawleys Island 29585.

Attorney James H. Burns has joined the business litigation practice at Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough. A former member of the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General's Corps, Burns will be an associate based in the Columbia office. While stationed at the Pentagon, Burns served as deputy legal counsel to the vice chief of naval operations. He provided time-sensitive legal opinions on ethics, complex investigations and military justice matters to senior Navy executives. He also served as assistant force judge advocate and operational law attorney for the commander of the U.S. Naval Forces Central Command. In addition, Burns was also a prosecutor for the trial service office in the southeast region of the United States.

2004

Robert D. Waltz has joined Keaveny Law Firm LLC as an attorney. He is retired from the U.S. Navy. He practices in admiralty and maritime litigation, construction, personal injury, product liability and professional malpractice defense.

2005

Anne Marie Ochylski and Jason Daniel Maertens, both of Greenvile, celebrated their wedding amongst loved ones on Saturday, March 15, 2008, at the Wyche Pavilion in downtown Greenville. Maertens practices law with Leatherwood, Walker, Todd and Mann, P.C.

Bill Connor, an attorney with Murphy-Grantland P.A., has written a book about his experiences in Afghanistan with the SC National Guard's 218th Brigade Combat Team. Articles from War was compiled from his writings first published in the Orangeburg Times and Democrat. The book is available online at bbotw.com and buybooksontheweb.com.

The judges of the United States Bankruptcy Court announce the addition of a new law clerk. Sarah Kistler is a law clerk for the chambers of Chief Judge John E. Waites.

2006

Law Office of Daryl G. Hawkins, LLC announces that Kristin J. McArthur has become an associate with the firm located at 1634 Main St., Ste. 201-A, Columbia 29201.

Mitchell Spearman has been named the Assistant Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Drexel University in Philadelphia. At Drexel, Spearman will focus his fundraising skills on gift and estate planning. For the past two years, Spearman has served as Assistant Director and then Director of Gift Planning at Presbyterian College. While at USC Law, Spearman found his love for fundraising through his work with the Adopt-a-Law Student campaign, in which he worked with Erin Bailey (2007) and college administrators to provide a warm and caring environment for the students displaced by Hurricane Katrina. Law students from Loyola and Tulane were greeted at USC Law with law firms providing necessary funding and support while they were in the State of South Carolina.

In Memoriam

1941

Douglas McKay, Jr. died Wednesday, September 10, 2008. McKay practiced law in Columbia beginning in 1941 with his father, Douglas McKay in the firm of McKay & Holmes. He practiced law for many years with McKay, Sherrill, Walker & Townsend in Columbia and then formed the law firm of McKay, Cauthen, Settana & Stubley, P.A. where he practiced until retirement in 2003. He was licensed to practice before many courts including the United States Supreme Court. He was a preeminent trial attorney and also was a mentor to numerous other successful attorneys in South Carolina. He was particularly noted in medical malpractice defense, workers compensation, and product liability. He was the chairman of the Governor's Advisory Committee of Workers' Compensation Laws for many years, and was instrumental in writing many changes to the Workers' Compensation Act to modernize the Act. He received many awards during his career including having recently received the first Worthy Adversary Award from the American Trial Lawyers' Association and the Special Recognition Award from the South Carolina Workers' Compensation Commission for years of work with the Commission.

1983

Greg Martin, who was serving his fourth term as mayor of Conway, died at his mountain home in western North Carolina. He was 51. Martin served as Conway's mayor since 1995 and prior to that was a city councilman from 1991 to 1995. Martin was a local real estate attorney.
