1964

The Humanities Council S.C. has elected six new board members to three-year terms. A newly selected board member from the Midlands was Walton McLeod. McLeod is a state representative in District 40. He has served Lexington and Newberry counties in the Legislature since 1997. McLeod practiced law and served as general counsel for South Carolina's Department of Health and Environmental Control from 1968 to 1994. He served two terms as mayor of Little Mountain.

1977

Manley Law Firm, LLC announces that Edward J. Dennis IV has relocated to the firm's Moncks Corner office located at 400-B Altman St., 29461.

1979

John David Whisenhunt Jr. and Robert D. McKissick announce the formation of Whisenhunt and McKissick, PC located at 654 S. Coit St., P.O. Drawer 1200, Florence 29501.

This year, fall commencement ceremonies at SC State University will be held on Saturday, Dec. 15, at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center. The Honorable Donald W. Beatty, a 1974 SC State alumnus and S.C. Supreme Court Justice, will speak at the 2 p.m. ceremony, which will include degree candidates representing the College of Business and Applied Professional Sciences and the College of Education, Humanities and Social Sciences. The Honorable Donald W. Beatty, a 1974 SC State alumnus, serves as a Justice in the Supreme Court of South Carolina.

1981

Constangy, Brooks & Smith, LLP welcomes David Hill Keller, formerly the CEO and primary shareholder in David Hill Keller, PA, in Greenville, South Carolina, as the newest addition to its expanding workers' compensation practice. As attorney of counsel, Keller brings decades of workers' compensation defense and family court mediation to Constangy's workers' compensation practice which has expanded by four attorneys in 2008.

1982

Ellis, Lawhorne & Sims, P.A., is pleased to announce Lana H. Sims, Jr., a founding shareholder of the full-service law firm, has been selected to serve as the South Carolina membership chair for the American Bar Association.

Timothy E. Meacham of Conway has joined the administration of Coastal Carolina University in a part-time capacity as Associate University Counsel. In the course of his career, Meacham has worked as a prosecutor, a trial attorney in general practice, a municipal attorney and as manager of a legal services agency. He has also served as a teaching associate in CCU's Department of Politics since 2004. He was named the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year in 2005.

A former governor will be awarded honorary degrees from Francis Marion University during spring commencement ceremonies at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, in the Smith University Center gymnasium. Gov. James "Jim" Hodges of Columbia will also be the commencement speaker for the 282 candidates for FMU degrees.

1986

Nexsen Pruet, LLC announced that Elbert Dorn has joined the firm as a member. Dorn has more than 20 years of trial experience and devotes his practice to products liability, pharmaceutical and class action litigation. Dorn has broad experience in handling complex commercial litigation. He has represented several pharmaceutical companies, petroleum companies and acted as coordinating counsel for one of the big three automotive companies. He is immediate past president of the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys Association.

1993

Autism Speaks announces that Lorri Shealy Unumb has become senior counsel with offices located at 2 Park Ave., New York 10016 and 1990 K St., NW, Washington, DC 20006.

1994

Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough partner Mark Fava has been re-elected to a two-year term on the governing committee of the American Bar Association's forum on air and space law. The forum includes more than 1,500 professionals who represent all areas of air and space law including airlines, airports, labor, financial communities, the FAA, DOT, NASA, as well as attorneys practicing in corporate, litigation and antitrust areas. Fava practices nationally in aviation litigation and regulatory law. Admitted to practice in Washington, D.C., he worked as the chief operations attorney for Delta Air Lines, Inc from 2001 to 2004. Fava represents aviation clients in matters involving the DOT, FAA, TSA and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. His current clients include air taxis, major air carriers, aircraft manufacturers, fixed based operators and fractional ownership organizations. Fava is general counsel of the Atlanta-based Air Taxi Association and is a leader of Nelson Mullins' Southeastern aviation law practice group. He also teaches aviation law as an adjunct professor at the University of South Carolina School of Law.

1995

1999

Motley Rice LLC announces that Marlon E. Kimpson has become a member of the firm located at 28 Bridgeside Blvd., Mt. Pleasant 29464.

2002

Motley Rice LLC announces that John A. Baden IV has become a member of the firm located at 28 Bridgeside Blvd., Mt. Pleasant 29464.

Alumni of Coastal Carolina University have been named 2008 Outstanding Alumni of the Year. The honors were awarded at a recognition ceremony in the Wall Auditorium on Saturday, Oct. 25 as part of Homecoming. Natasha Mabry Hanna, an attorney with Hearn, Brittain & Martin who handles a variety of high-profile litigation and criminal cases, was one of those recognized. She was president of the Horry County Bar Association in 2007, is a member of the S.C. Bar Association and the S.C. Trial Lawyers Association Board of Governors, the Horry County Common Pleas Committee and the Coastal Carolina University Legacy Advisory Council.

2004

Carrie Fisher, who has only been an assistant U.S. attorney for nine months, has received the prestigious Palmetto Award from U.S. Attorney Walter Wilkins. The award went to Fisher, who works in the Florence office, and six other assistants from across the state for outstanding effort, commitment and professionalism, Wilkins said in a press release. Fisher works on a hodgepodge of cases, from firearms and drugs to white-collar crime. Before joining the Florence U.S. Attorney's Office, Fisher was practicing law at a Greenville law firm and served as a law clerk for Federal 4th Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Karen J. Williams.

2005

Emily R. Gifford of Richardson, Plowden & Robinson, P.A., has been named to the editorial board of the American Bar Association (ABA) Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section's TortSource, a national publication for attorneys. The ABA Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section (TIPS) is one of the leading ABA sections for the placement of young lawyers in leadership positions. The organization recruits and develops young lawyers with the intention of providing them with the professional skills and competitive edge they need to succeed. TortSource, a TIPS publication, highlights tort and insurance law issues and provides lawyers with advice and updates on related legal matters.

Gifford joined Richardson Plowden in 2005 and focuses her practice on construction law, surety law and commercial litigation. She is member of the South Carolina Bar Association. During law school, Gifford was student editor-in-chief of ABA Real Property, Probate and Trust Journal. She also has been published in Medical Trial Technique Quarterly.

Mr. and Mrs. Kenny Arthur of Graniteville, S.C. are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Patricia Yvonne Arthur to Clifford Keith Rushton, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Rushton of Graniteville. She is employed by Aiken County Solicitor's Office as an Assistant Solicitor.

2006

2007

In Memoriam

1969

Chris Staubes, Jr. entered into eternal rest on the afternoon of October 22, 2008. He was a retired Attorney with Clawson and Staubes, LLC. He was a Retired Lt. Col. from the Judge Advocate Corps., with the U.S. Army Reserve.

1977

Nancy McManaway Young, 72, died Friday, October 10, 2008. She was a member of the Moot Court Team while in law school and was admitted to practice in the South Carolina courts and the US District Court, taught family and civil mediation on behalf of the SC Bar Association and also served on numerous committees including the Lawyer's Fund for Client Protection and chairperson of the Family Law Council. She was a presenter for many seminars including Continuing Legal Education. She was Service Award Winner for the SC Bar Association Pro Bono Program. She was a speaker at numerous SC Trial Lawyers Association conventions and also trained DSS staff on legal procedures. She was trained as a Family Court mediator in Maryland before trainings were offered in South Carolina. She was later trained as a Circuit Court mediator. She was a member of the SC Council on Alternative Dispute Resolution and worked to bring mediation into the Family Courts of South Carolina.

1981

Nancy Dinwiddie Hawk, a community leader, Charleston preservationist and nationally honored mother, died after a long battle with cancer. She was 86. Hawk's influence and charity touched every corner of the Lowcountry for more than 50 years. She founded Mason Preparatory School, saved historic buildings from demolition and was a tireless patron of the arts. She was active in her church, First (Scots) Presbyterian, practiced law and raised nine children.

For decades, local politicians and Republican presidential candidates sought her advice and, as importantly, her support.

2008

Beloved daughter, loving sister, devoted friend and cherished fiancee, Kathryn Anne Bockman, died Friday, October 17, 2008. Kate was 24. Kate was the eldest child of Robert Bockman, a senior partner at McNair Law Firm who has been an adjunct professor of law since 1993 at USC's law school. Her mother, Elizabeth Kevin Warwick Bockman is an English teacher at Hand Middle School. During her studies, Kate was a member of the University of South Carolina Law Review, an associate justice of the Moot Court Bar, a member of the Order of the Barristers and a member of the Order of the Coif. While she was in law school, Kate served as a law clerk to the Senate Judiciary Committee, and she was employed as a law clerk at the law firm of Willoughby and Hoefer; the law firm of Sowell, Gray, Lafitte and Stepp, and the law firm of Nelson, Mullins, Riley and Scarborough. At the time of her death, Kate was serving as law clerk to the Hon. Jean H. Toal, chief justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court. Kate's family asks that memorials be made to the University of South Carolina Law School Scholarship Fund in the name of Kathryn A. Bockman, Class of 2008.
