1954

The South Carolina Association for Justice said Tuesday that District Judge G. Ross Anderson has been honored with its lifetime achievement award. Anderson was given the award during a ceremony Friday December 12. Association's executive director Mike Hemlepp says Anderson helped found the group in 1958, known then as the South Carolina Trial Lawyers Association. Anderson served as its president from 1971 to 1972.

1959

Mark Buyck, Jr. received a Distinguished Alumni Award from USC’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication.

1968

John P. Cardillo, a Naples attorney, has been elected as Vice-Chair of the Judicial Qualifications Commission (JQC). The Judicial Qualifications Commission is comprised of fifteen citizens ad is an independent statewide panel created by the Florida Constitution, vested with jurisdiction to conduct investigations for judges’ misconduct or incapacity, hold hearings and make recommendations of discipline to the Supreme Court of Florida.

1970

Stanley Hackett and his wife Elaine became first time grandparents in September, to Ann Caroline Kimball. Stanley is a partner at Troutman Sanders in Atlanta, GA.

1973

Barry W. Knobel announces the opening of Knobel Mediation Services, LLC located at 111 Sharpe St., P.O. Box 22, Anderson 29621.

1986

Injured Workers’ Advocates, formerly the Association of South Carolina Claimant Attorneys for Workers’ Compensation held its 26th Annual Meeting at the Grove Park Inn, Asheville, North Carolina during November. Officers and executive committee members for the 2008-2009 year took office at the close of the Annual Meeting. Mark T. Arden, of Chappell Smith & Arden in Columbia has been elected as Treasurer.

1987

Progress Energy has named Frank Schiller to serve as the company’s general counsel and is promoting him to senior vice president of a newly created Compliance group, which will include the Legal and Audit Services departments.

1988

Florence attorney Mark Buyck III has been named chairman of the Francis Marion Trail Commission. Buyck, 47, takes the reins from Ben Zeigler, the first commission chairman and the driving force behind its establishment. Zeigler, also a Florence attorney, has served since the trail commission was formed in 2003.

1990

Injured Workers’ Advocates, formerly the Association of South Carolina Claimant Attorneys for Workers’ Compensation held its 26th Annual Meeting at the Grove Park Inn, Asheville, North Carolina during November. Officers and executive committee members for the 2008-2009 year took office at the close of the Annual Meeting. William B. “Bret” Salley, Jr., of The Salley Law Firm, PA in Lexington was elected President of Injured Workers’ Advocates. Salley practices in the areas of workers' compensation, personal injury and criminal defense.

1991

Ellis, Lawhorne & Sims, PA shareholder, John T. Lay, Jr. has been selected as president of the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys’ Association (SCDTAA). He has also been selected to serve on the faculty of one of the most prominent national trial attorney educational programs in the country, the International Association of Defense Counsel (IADC) Trial Academy. The 10-day academy is held at Stanford University.The IADC Trial Academy is among the oldest and most prestigious continuing education programs for defense trial attorneys. The intensive program combines faculty instruction and demonstration with student participation. It attracts young attorneys from top U.S. law firms seeking to enhance their defense trial advocacy skills. The faculty is composed of trial lawyers with extensive trial experience from different geographic regions and diverse practices across the country.

1993

Injured Workers’ Advocates, formerly the Association of South Carolina Claimant Attorneys for Workers’ Compensation held its 26th Annual Meeting at the Grove Park Inn, Asheville, North Carolina during November. Officers and executive committee members for the 2008-2009 year took office at the close of the Annual Meeting. Margaret “Marti” Miles Bluestein, of Bluestein Nichols Thompson & Delgado LLC in Columbia was elected Secretary.

The Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR) announced that Attorney General Michael B. Mukasey administered the oath of office to five new members of the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) at an investiture ceremony held in December at EOIR Headquarters. Garry Malphrus was appointed as a member of the BIA in August 2008. Malphrus served as an immigration judge at the Arlington Immigration Court. From 2001 to 2004, Malphrus served as associate director of the White House Domestic Policy Council. From 1997 to 2001, Malphrus worked on the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, which included serving as chief counsel and staff director of the Subcommittee on Criminal Justice Oversight and later, with the Subcommittee on the Constitution.

1996

The Department of Commerce announces that Cynthia Smith Turnipseed has been named assistant to the director of the South Carolina Coordinating Council for Economic Development with offices located at 1201 Main St., Ste. 1600, Columbia 29201.

1997

Collins & Lacy, PC is pleased to announce that attorney Christopher M. Adams has been named shareholder of the South Carolina firm. Chris Adams practices in the Columbia office where his focus includes general civil litigation with a concentration in construction law, products liability, premises liability, criminal defense, and catastrophic injury. He is a member of the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorney’s Association, the Defense Research Institute, the Charleston Home Builders’ Association, and the American Subcontractors’ Association of the Carolinas.

1998

Nexsen Pruet announced that Laurie Becker has been elected Member (partner) of the firm. Laurie Becker (Columbia) practices in the areas of commercial lending, creditor rights and bankruptcy, commercial real estate, and economic development.

2000

Ellis, Lawhorne & Sims, PA announces that Michael H. Quinn Jr. has joined the firm as an of counsel attorney. The firm is located at 1501 Main St., 5th Floor, Columbia 29201. Quinn is a member of the Firm’s Business, Real Estate and Finance Practice Group. At Ellis Lawhorne, Quinn will focus his practice on commercial real estate, business transactions, and condemnation.

2001

Nexsen Pruet announced that Jamie Hedgepath has been elected Member (partner) of the firm. Jamie Hedgepath's (Greenville) practice focuses on employment issues, including employment discrimination, FMLA, wage payment and employee handbook matters. Mr. Hedgepath also practices extensively in the areas of ERISA and employee benefits litigation.

2003

Futeral Law Firm, LLC announces that Thomas C. Nelson has become a member of the firm located at 1004 Anna Knapp Blvd., Mt. Pleasant 29464.

2004

Collins & Lacy, PC is pleased to announce that Suzanne Boulware Cole has been named shareholder of the South Carolina firm. Suzy Cole practices in the firm’s Greenville office where her practice focuses on workers compensation. She is a member of the South Carolina Workers’ Compensation Educational Association, the Defense Research Institute, and the South Carolina Self-Insurers Association.

Lewis & Babcock, LLP announces that Brady R. Thomas has become partner of the firm located at 1513 Hampton St., Columbia 29211.

2006

Cook Law Firm, LLC announces that Jason C. Bybee has joined the firm as an associate in its Lancaster office located at 300 N. White St., Lancaster 29720.

2007

The S.C. Medical Association announces that Wyman Bowers has joined the organization as Associate General Counsel with offices located at 132 Westpark Blvd., Columbia 29210.

Linda Farron Knapp, PC announces that H. Marie Vermillion has joined the firm as an associate located at 21 Hugh St., P.O. Box 714, Barnwell 29812.

2007

Anderson & Anderson announces that Jennifer P. Sumner has joined the firm as a partner and the name of the firm has been changed to Anderson and Sumner, LLP.

2008

Kathryn Cavanaugh and John Eric Ashton were married November 8, 2008. She is employed with the Fifth Circuit Solicitor’s Office in Columbia.

McDonald, McKenzie, Rubin, Miller and Lybrand, LLP announces that B. Reynolds Elliott has joined the firm as an associate.

Gallivan, White & Boyd, PA announces that Laura E. Figueroa has joined the firm located at 55 Beattie Place, St. 1200, Greenville 29601.

Mike Kelly Law Group, LLC announces that Brad Hewett has become an associate of the firm in the Columbia office located at 500 Taylor St., 29201.

Unity Baptist Church, Hickory Grove, S.C., was the setting Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, for the marriage of Nellie Elizabeth "Beth" Ramsey of Sharon, S.C., and Thomas Alan Faulkner of Smyrna, S.C. She is a law clerk to the Honorable Lee S. Alford, resident circuit court judge for the sixteenth judicial circuit.

In Memoriam

1942

Eva Bryan Wilson Cookson passed from this life Tuesday, December 9, 2008. She graduated from Columbia High School, the University of South Carolina, and the USC School of Law in 1942. During WWII, she worked as an attorney in the Office of Price Administration. She then joined the U.S. Foreign Service and served in the U.S. embassies in France and Australia. She moved to Barnwell, SC, to be near her sister's family. She restored the old Manse of the Episcopal Church, where she resided for many years, before moving to Laurel Crest in Columbia 6 years ago.

1958

Arthur Manning Flowers, Jr. died Monday, December 29, 2008, at Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community in West Columbia. He graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1951, and served in the United States Air Force during the Korean conflict. After completing his service to his country, Mr. Flowers returned to Columbia and graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1958. Mr. Flowers practiced law in Georgetown for 38 years as a partner in the Moore, Flowers and Doar law firm (which merged in later years with the McNair Law Firm).
