Edward W. Mullins Jr. has been awarded the Lou Potter Award for lifetime achievement by the Defense Research and Trial Lawyer’s Association. Mullins, a member of the Columbia law firm Nelson, Mullins, Riley & Scarborough, is the 13th lawyer in the country to receive association’s most prestigious award. It recognizes Mullins’ leadership in the defense bar and in the community at large.

Anne Allen Waters Green, writing as Anne Westbrook Green, authored an article published in the 2008 issue of "The Journal of Southern Legal History." Titled "H. A. Allen: The Lawyer and the Man," the article provided a survey of the Georgia legal career of the author's grandfather from 1908 to 1946. Allen began his career in Senoia, GA and moved his practice to Atlanta in 1914. In Atlanta, he soon established himself as a formidable trial lawyer. His cases were often in the news. The author relied on contemporaneous news accounts, as well as published opinions, as source material for the article. The Journal is published annually by The Georgia Legal History Foundation, Inc., head-quartered at Mercer University Law School, Macon Georgia.

Gov. Jack Markell announced June 17 that he plans to nominate William B. Chandler III for a second term as chancellor of the Court of Chancery, Delaware's court of equity and the nation's leading forum for the resolution of business disputes. Chandler joined the Court of Chancery as a vice chancellor in 1989, after four years on the Superior Court bench. He was elevated to chancellor in 1997.

IN MEMORIAM
A memorial service for Jennifer Detrick Evans, 41, died June 21, 2009. She received her Juris Doctorate from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1996 and was a member of the South Carolina Bar. In addition to her law degree, Evans had a Master's degree in International Relations and International Economics from the University of South Carolina. She graduated cum laude from Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, N.C., with a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and Political Science.
Prior to joining the Attorney General's Office in1998, Evans worked as an Assistant Solicitor for the Sixteenth Judicial Circuit in York County. She also clerked for Simmons, Griffin and Lydon, L.L.P., and assisted Professor William McAnich in conjunction with the publication of The Criminal Law of South Carolina, Third Edition, published March 1996.
During her tenure at the Attorney General's Office, Evans prosecuted public corruption cases and multi-county drug offenses for the South Carolina State Grand Jury as an Assistant Attorney General before being promoted to the Chief of Prosecution in 2003. She specialized in violent crimes, sexual offenses, environmental crimes and other white-collar cases. In 2005 she received "The Attorney General Award for Excellence," which is the highest honor given to an employee by the Office of the Attorney General. In 2006 she received the Ernest F. Hollings Award for Excellence in State Prosecution, given to an Assistant Attorney General whose performance best exemplifies excellence in criminal prosecution.
Frampton Mikell Harper, 69, of 702 Taylor's Chapel Road, Rabun Gap, GA, died Saturday, June 6, 2009 following a long illness. A native of Williston, SC, Harper was a graduate of Williston-Elko High School, where he was senior class president, The Citadel (1961), and the University of South Carolina School of Law (1964). A Captain in the U.S. Army, he served in Vietnam and was awarded The Bronze Star.
Harper practiced law for more than 40 years in Williston, where he also served as Mayor, and in Beaufort, SC. Following retirement, he moved to Rabun Gap, Georgia, where he coached basketball, taught criminal justice at the college level, and engaged in independent research and writing.
He authored two books relating to the Civil War. The Second Georgia Infantry Regiment (Indigo Publishing, 2005) is a written and pictorial history of this regiment, in which several Harper men served and which fought in the most famous and important campaigns of the Eastern theater of the Civil War. The book was nominated for the Benjamin Franklin Award. A companion volume, Catharine of Ivanhoe (2008) explores the human side of the war through the personal letters of one Georgia soldier and his wife's remarkable journal.
Services for Robert Jennings Jones, 82, were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, June 8, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Jones died peacefully on Thursday, June 4, at the Episcopal Home at Still Hopes with his wife and daughter holding his hands.
After graduating from Spartanburg High School in 1944, Jones attended Wofford College in Spartanburg. Service to his country briefly interrupted his education: he served in the U.S. Navy from 1945-1946, after which he completed his A.B. degree at Wofford in 1949. He was a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity.
Jones moved to Columbia to attend the University of South Carolina School of Law, where he received his LL.B. degree in 1952. He was a member of the Order of the Wig and Robe, and a member of the International Legal Fraternity of Phi Delta Phi as well. He briefly practiced law in Spartanburg before settling in Columbia in the employment of the Farm Credit Banks of Columbia. He retired from that institution after nearly forty years, concluding his legal career as the Assistant Vice President and Assistant General Counsel.
Steven E. Solomon, 61, passed away Saturday, May 30, 2009 at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center. He was a 1969 graduate of the University of South Carolina, and a 1973 graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law, where he was a member of the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity. Solomon practiced law in Myrtle Beach for 36 years. He was a member of the South Carolina Bar Association, The American Immigration Lawyers Association, and The American Judicial Society. He was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Billy Chavis.
