1983
Debra O. Jackson was sworn in as Florence city judge by 12th Circuit Court judge Ralph King Anderson Jr., on Monday September 29, 2009. Jackson was in a private law practice with a focus on criminal defense from 1988 until June this year. She has practiced in municipal, magistrate, general sessions and Federal district courts. Jackson served as senior municipal judge of Florence from 1988 to 1990 and as assistant solicitor of Horry County from 1985 to 1988, where she prosecuted criminal cases including capital offenses. Jackson was a city prosecutor and staff attorney for the city of Florence in 1984, a year after she served as a law clerk for the S.C. Court of Appeals.

The ten recipients were selected by a panel of judges based on their outstanding achievement in the following key areas: achievement in law; involvement in the profession; support of the community; and mentoring. The Greenville Chamber announced that its Board of Directors have unanimously elected Sam Konduros, president of SK Strategies, to serve as chair-elect of the organization in 2010 and chairman in 2011. Konduros currently serves as vice-chair of Organizational Excellence on the Chamber Board. Sam Konduros is president of SK Strategies, LLC, a Greenville, South Carolina-based consulting firm which specializes in integrated marketing, economic development, international business, public/private partnerships and strategic planning for corporate and institutional clients - including Clemson University [Senior Development Counsel and Motorsports Director], Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center [Strategic Partner] and Kent Worldwide.

The board of directors of the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina selected attorney and banking executive Elizabeth Brazas to succeed Pat Smith as president of the foundation, effective Nov. 1. Brazas, a graduate of Davidson College and the University of South Carolina School of Law, has worked in the private sector at Wachovia Bank and, most recently, at the Threshold Group, combining philanthropic, legal and wealth management experience.

Columbia attorney Carl L. Solomon has been selected by his peers for the second year for inclusion in the 2010 release of Best Lawyers of America in the field of Personal Injury Litigation and named to South Carolina Super Lawyers 2009. Solomon has also received the coveted AV Peer Review Rating from Martindale-Hubble. Governor Mark Sanford named Rock Hill attorney Leah B. Moody to the University of South Carolina (USC) Board of Trustees. A practicing attorney in Rock Hill, Leah B. Moody graduated from the USC School of Law and has previously served as Deputy General Counsel to Governor Hodges, Staff Counsel to the South Carolina Senate Judiciary Committee, and Adjunct Professor for two South Carolina colleges. Moody was a member of the USC Law School Alumni Board, and is also active in her community - currently serving on the Rock Hill School District Three Foundation Board and the Rock Hill Area Chamber of Commerce Board from 2004 to 2007.

IN MEMORIAM
George Louis Dial Jr. died Saturday, September 26, 2009. Dial attended the University of South Carolina School of Law and graduated in 1955. He went on to become a member of the Richland County and American Bar Associations, South Carolina Bar, South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys Association, American Judicative Society and Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity. While at the University of South Carolina, Dial was a member of the USC Golf Team and Omicron Delta Kappa, as well as a member and past president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity.
Cannon Matthews died Monday, September 14, 2009 at his home in Pineville.
He served in the US Navy from 1945 to 1948 aboard the destroyer escort DE-710, the USS Gosselin, in the Pacific Theater. Following the war, he continued his studies at the University of South Carolina, with dual majors in Political Science and Economics. He received his Law Degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1952, and was admitted to the South Carolina Bar that year. He practiced law in Columbia for 12 years, before becoming a sales representative for West Publishing Company.
Judge Berry L. Mobley 76, of Lancaster died on September 29. He attended Clemson College and the University of South Carolina and entered the U. S. Army in September of 1954 where he served two years with a Military Police Battalion. He then graduated from the University of South Carolina with a B. S. in Business Management. In September of 1961, he was admitted to the University of South Carolina Law School and graduated in June of 1964. He opened his law practice in Lancaster, South Carolina where he practiced in all areas of law. He served as City Attorney for the City of Lancaster for eight years. He was elected as a Family Court Judge in June of 1982 and has served continuously since. He served as President of the Family Court Judges Association and served on the Family Court Judges Advisory Committee and the Judicial Standards Commission.
William Lincoln Shipley, Sr., 82, of Moncks Corner, an attorney, and husband of Lavinia (Lou) H. Shipley, died Wednesday, August 26, 2009, at his residence. He graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1951 and began practicing law in Berkeley County that same year, continuing his practice until 2009. He was Master in Equity for Berkeley County from 1960 until 1992. Shipley was a World War II Veteran, serving in the United States Air Force. He was an active member of the American Legion for 59 years and past Post Commander of Berkeley Post 126 of Moncks Corner. He served as State Judge Advocate of the American Legion for 25 years. He was a member of the 40 & 8 of the American Legion and a member of the VFW and DAV.
Henry Radcliffe Sims, 78, died Sept. 19, 2009. Sims was born in Orangeburg a son of the late Hugo S. and Lucille Howell Sims. He attended Wofford College and earned his LL.B. Degree from The University of South Carolina School of Law in 1957. He was retired as securities advisor for the Lowman Homes of SC. He was President of Henry Sims Securities Inc., 1967-1977. He was a former member of the South Carolina State Development Board, and was Chairman of the South Carolina Jobs-Economics Development Authority, he also formerly served as Director of Southern National Bank, Bankers Trust of SC , NCNB South Carolina, NationsBank of SC. Sims was a former Trustee of Limestone College . In 1987, Sims was awarded "The Order of the Palmetto" by Governor Riley, and the "Special Appreciation Certificate" by Governor Campbell in 1990.
