Brant Hellwig graduated summa cum laude from Wake Forest University in 1994 with a bachelor of science in mathematical economics. He attended Wake Forest as a Carswell Scholar, and his honors include receiving the Kenneth Tyson Raynor Award in mathematics. Hellwig continued as a Carswell Scholar at Wake Forest University School of Law, where he served on the editorial board of the Wake Forest Law Review and was a member of the Order of the Coif.
Following his graduation from law school in 1997, Hellwig practiced law with the firm of Bell, Davis & Pitt, P.A., in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. His practice focused primarily in the field of trusts and estates. He left practice in 1999 to pursue an LL.M. in Taxation at New York University School of Law. He graduated from the program at the top of his class, receiving the Harry J. Rudick Memorial Award for distinction in the Graduate Tax Program.
After receiving his LL.M., Hellwig served as a law clerk to the Hon. Juan F. Vasquez of the United States Tax Court. Hellwig returned to NYU following the clerkship to serve as Acting Assistant Professor in the Graduate Tax Program. His courses included Taxation of Property Transactions, Estate and Gift Tax, and Tax Procedure. While at NYU, Hellwig also served as Assistant Editor of the Tax Law Review.
In the fall of 2002, Hellwig joined the faculty of the University of South Carolina School of Law as an Assistant Professor, and he was promoted to Associate Professor in 2007. His course offerings include Income Taxation, Partnership Taxation, Taxation of Property Transfers, and Trusts and Estates. His publications have addressed the proper tax treatment of contingent attorney's fees, as well as the estate-tax vulnerabilities of family limited partnerships.
