Future Students
Environmental Law
Environmental law is an important field in South Carolina, the Southeast region, and the nation. The School of Law offers a variety of courses and opportunities in environmental law and related areas. These courses provide a broad-based education for those hoping to practice environmental law following graduation, as well as students who simply want to take one or two courses to complement another practice area. Many School of Law graduates are working directly in environmental law, some in South Carolina, and others elsewhere in the country, including Washington, D.C. These jobs span the spectrum of environmental law, and include work with law firms, corporations, government agencies, environmental groups, and trade organizations.
The School of Law's environmental law courses include federal environmental law and specialized courses in environmental advocacy, coastal conservation, environmental law of South Carolina, land use planning, natural resources, energy law, and international environmental law and development. The Environmental Law Clinic offers third-year students an opportunity to work with actual clients on environmental and natural resource matters. In addition, students who are interested in particular aspects of the environment may earn up to six hours of degree credit from courses outside the law school curriculum through the University's School of the Environment, the College of Engineering and Information Technology, the Arnold School of Public Health, or the College of Arts and Sciences. The School of Law also offers unique co- and extra-curricular activities through the Southeastern Environmental Law Journal and the Environmental Law Society.
Law students with particular interest in environmental law also have two dual degree options. For those who want to focus on science or management, the dual degree program
with USC's School of the Environment allows students to earn a J.D. and a Master's in Earth and Environmental Resources Management (M.E.E.R.M.) in just four academic years. Students can also apply for a dual degree at U.S. News & World Report's top-ranked environmental law program at the Vermont Law School (VLS), where students can earn a USC J.D. and a VLS Master of Studies in Environmental Law (M.S.E.L.) in three years, including
summers.
