Thomas Kilpatrick wins Winter 2011 National Law Review Student Writing Contest

January 24, 2012

Thomas Kilpatrick Thomas Kilpatrick, a third year law student at the University of South Carolina School of Law, has won the Winter 2011 National Law Review Student Writing Contest for his article Mortgage Electronic Registration System (MERS): A Twenty First Century Creation Navigating An Eighteenth Century Legal System.

Kilpatrick credits Legal Writing Instructor Elizabeth Dalzell for providing him guidance, stating, “None of this would have been possible without Professor Dalzell. I'm honored that my article has received such a warm response. I never expected to win a contest; I just wanted to present a very compelling and relevant issue, judicial treatment of MERS and its impact on the foreclosure crisis, in a cogent way.”

During his time in law school, Kilpatrick has clerked with several firms, including Kean Miller, LLP, and The Law Offices of Brian L. Boger. Thomas eventually hopes to practice in business or real estate litigation.
