"Legal Research for Non-Law Librarians"
|
In order to promote public access to legal information in South Carolina, Coleman Karesh law librarians are traveling throughout the state with a new training initiative entitled Circuit Riders Outreach Program. This program is a series of monthly workshops given around the state teaching public and academic librarians about the legal research process and the resources available to their patrons.
The intent of the workshop, "Legal Research for Non-Law Librarians," is to train non-law librarians in basic legal research skills to enable them to assist patrons who are doing legal research. The program elements include an overview of the legal system, the legislative, executive, and judicial branches, and how they function; legal resources available to public and academic libraries; finding primary sources; using secondary sources as legal research tools; building a basic low-cost print legal collection; and providing legal reference without giving legal advice.
