Transnational Dispute Resolution at Gray's Inn, London

| |

The School of Law offers a study-abroad program in London, taught during three weeks of the month of May in conjunction with The Honourable Society of Gray’s Inn, one of the four London Inns of Court.

The program is designed around a four-credit-hour course entitled “Transnational Dispute Resolution.” It is taught on the premises of Gray’s Inn, located near the Law Courts in the Bloomsbury neighborhood of central London. Interested students are encouraged to visit the Gray’s Inn web site at www.graysinn.org.uk. The subject matter of the course includes U.S./English comparative law and legal institutions, international dispute resolution in foreign and United States courts, and international alternative dispute resolution. The subject matter lends itself to an interest not only in dispute resolution, but also in English legal history, comparative law, and international commercial law.

The course meets four mornings a week, with Thursday afternoons and Fridays left free. Arrangements are made for visits to London legal sites such as the Houses of Parliament, the Law Courts, and the other Inns of Court. One function of Gray’s Inn is the training of student barristers, and formal interaction between our students and the Gray’s Inn student barristers includes dinners “in Hall” in the Inn’s 16th-Century Great Hall, and a debate (in which the School of Law team has a very strong record).

The course is directed by Professor Martin C. McWilliams, Jr., and taught principally by Professor McWilliams and Professor Joel Samuels. Course materials are provided.

Lodging convenient to the Inn is arranged for those students desiring it.
