Three alumni and USC School of Law staff member graduate from Leadership South Carolina

Congratulations to three of our alumni and one of our staff members for graduating from Leadership SC: Michelle P. Clayton, Class of 2004, Turner Padget Graham & Laney; Hamilton E. Russell, III, Class of 1995, Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough; Alicia Smith, Director of Development, USC School of Law; and Patrick W. Turner, Class of 1991, AT&T.

Leadership South Carolina is a statewide endeavor that develops South Carolina’s emerging leaders to increase the State’s capacity to address issues affecting the quality of life.

It was established in 1979 by the Governor’s Office and the South Carolina business community. It is one of the oldest and most respected of the statewide leadership programs. Leadership South Carolina provides gifted and highly motivated South Carolinians an opportunity to advance their leadership qualities while broadening their understanding of issues facing the state.

Each year, approximately 55 individuals are selected through a competitive process for participation in Leadership South Carolina. Applicants may be nominated or may apply directly for admission to the program. The selection committee places major emphasis on the individual’s demonstrated abilities as a leader and on their personal past record of service in a leadership capacity. The program seeks to maintain a balance reflective of the demographic composition of the state.

Opportunities for personal growth include assessments of learning and leadership styles and how these styles interact with those of others. Class sessions include presentations, panels, experiential learning, and a great deal of interaction between class members and presenters.

Leadership South Carolina class of 2009’s class project is to raise $100,000 by June 1 for the state’s four regional food banks. The 50-member class launched its “Hunger Never Takes a Break” campaign at the Harvest Hope Food Bank in March.

Leadership South Carolina is supported by Clemson University’s Institute for Economic and Community Development at the Sandhill Research and Education Center in Columbia. For more information, visit: leadershipsouthcarolina.net.
