The Moot Court Bar holds an annual 2L Competition for the purpose of selecting the new members of the organization. Second-year law students (2Ls), who are interested in attaining a position on the bar, compete in the 2L competition by submitting a written brief and then participating in two rounds of oral argument before a panel of judges comprised of local judges, attorneys, and appellate-level law clerks. This year’s 2L Competition was open to the 229 members of the 2L class, out of which 19 were invited to the bar.
Following the extension of invitations to the bar, the 19 invitees participated in a ranking round, which determined the top competitors, known as the Order of the Barristers. The top four competitors, Mac McQuillin, Miles Coleman, Stephanie Trotter, and Claire Hall, competed in a Final Round before the South Carolina Court of Appeals on October 9, 2007.
The top four competitors presented oral arguments before Chief Judge Kaye G. Hearn, Judge Paula H. Thomas, and Judge John W. Kittredge. The competitors performed exceedingly well, and are to be commended for the superb result of their many hours of preparation and dedicated work.
In the end, the South Carolina Court of Appeals selected Miles Coleman as the overall winner. Congratulations to Mac McQuillin, Miles Coleman, Stephanie Trotter, and Claire Hall for their outstanding performances!
