We're looking forward to welcoming the Law Class of 2016 to the School of Law community and to an informative and enjoyable New Student Orientation program on August 19, 20, and 21, 2013.
Monday, August 19 will be a full day. Registration and a continental breakfast begin at 8:30 a.m. in the Law School Lobby. Students will spend the first part of the day learning about our academic community, their classmates, and the new and challenging discipline of law study. Dress for the daytime program is business casual.
After the daytime activities, students return to campus at 5:00 p.m. for the Professionalism Oath ceremony. Faculty, staff, and alumni will be present to welcome you formally to the legal profession, as Chief Justice Jean Hoefer Toal of the South Carolina Supreme Court administers the Student Professionalism Oath. A reception with alumni mentors and faculty follows the ceremony. Dress for the ceremony and reception is professional attire. Family members of new students are cordially invited to attend the ceremony and reception.
Tuesday, August 20 continues with an introduction to the professional culture of the Law School, the Honor Code, library and technology resources, and an overview of the academic programs. Students will have pictures taken for the Law School Directory, so they should plan to look good at least from the shoulders up! Tuesday's Orientation program concludes at 12:45 p.m.
On Wednesday, August 21, the focus turns to professional skills as new students are introduced to people and programs that will play an important role in their academic and professional development. Topics will include academic success resources, career services, health and wellness, character and fitness requirements for admission to practice, financial literacy, and the incoming class Service Day project. Orientation concludes with a lunchtime cookout on the law school patio, after which students turn to reading and work on case briefs for the first day of class on Thursday.
Detailed schedules for both first-year and transfer student orientation follow. Questions can be directed to the Admissions Office at 803.777.6605, or the Student Affairs Office at 803.777.1451. Welcome to the Carolina Law community!
