Where are they now?

Megan Ehrlich

What firm/organization are you working with now?
Charleston County Public Defender's Office

What kind of pro bono or volunteer work have you been involved in?
Programs through my office; youth programs for juvenile offenders; shelters

What are the main reasons why you would recommend that law students become involved in pro bono work?
Doing pro bono work is a great way to give back to the community but is also a fulfilling experience - as much as you think you are doing to give back, you are always getting more in return from the people you meet and the life stories that you hear

How would you encourage current law students to get involved with the Pro Bono program?

Has pro bono work contributed to your sense of career satisfaction?
Yes

Did your experiences in the Pro Bono program at USC prepare you or benefit you in your career?
Yes

In your career, have you seen an overlap between your volunteer work and your sense of your own place in the community and the legal profession?
Definitely

How do pro bono efforts fit in to the work of the South Carolina Bar?

What kind of perceptions, positive or negative, do you think that the bar as a whole has about attorneys who are actively involved in pro bono work?
I think people involved with pro bono work get more credit for that work than attorneys who are doing public service on a regular basis (like civil legal aid or public defenders) - but as long as the community is benefiting, who cares

What is most memorable/best experience you had during your law school career through the Pro Bono program?
Volunteering at dinners for shelters and the Talent/No Talent show

What does the 20th Anniversary of the Pro Bono program mean to you?
It's good to know that a program that gave so many students a feeling of comfort and family during law school is still there and available to students; Pam does a great job of making us all feel important and welcome - and spreading that into the community

What is your most cherished memory with Pam?
Getting a cup of coffee in there every morning!
