Important Dates for Degree Candidates
from the Office of the Law Registrar & Academic Services

GRADUATION: The commencement/hooding ceremony will be on Friday, May 10, 2013 at 9:30am on the Horseshoe. Grades are not due before graduation. Additional information regarding the ceremony will be provided by Megan Seiner.

GRADES: Grades are due Friday, May 31, 2013 by 5pm. Once all grades have been posted and we verify that all degree requirements have been met, the approved degree applications will be taken to the University Registrar's office at 516/518 South Main Street. If all grades are submitted on time, the target date for submitting approved degree applications is Wednesday, June 5, 2013.

DEGREE CERTIFICATION: Next, all forms or requests for degree certification letters for bar exams that were submitted will be completed. The forms/letters will be mailed starting on Friday, June 7th, with the exception of those forms needing class ranks. If you have a hold on your record, your degree certification will not be sent until the hold is removed. The most common holds are: parking fines, loan exit counseling, residency, and library fines. You can check for holds by accessing VIP, then ACADEMICS and Registration Eligibility.

NOTE: Bar application instructions may state that the Dean of the law school must complete degree certification or character and fitness forms. Please submit all forms to the law registrar, except undergraduate certifications. Forms requiring undergraduate certification must be submitted to your undergraduate institution even if you attended USC as an undergraduate.

OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT: If an official transcript is needed, you must request it from the University Registrar's office. The form is available at http://registrar.sc.edu. The University Registrar's office is located at 516/518 South Main Street. The main phone number is 803-777-5555. Make sure that you indicate to "Mail After Degree posted for May 2013" (3rd option on the form).

CLASS RANK: Your final class rank should be available the week of June 17th. You will need to submit a Student Information Request Form. Degree certification letters/forms needing class rank information will be mailed at this time.

DIPLOMA: Finally, the University Registrar's office will mail diplomas in August. Contact the University Registrar's office for questions regarding your diploma, 803-777-5555.

Rising 3L Registration
Summer 2013 courses (VIP) Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at 12:50pm
Fall 2013 courses (SSC) Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at 1:00pm

Registration for Progression-Entry or Block Registration Courses:

Rising 2Ls have registration priority for these courses, therefore rising 3Ls will be unable to register for progression-entry courses or the 2L block course until 3:00 p.m. on Friday, March 29, 2013, subject to space being available in the course. The progression entry courses are: Business Corporations; Criminal Procedure; Evidence; Income Tax; and Wills, Trusts & Estates. The block course is Problems in Professional Responsibility.

A few important reminders and helpful hints:

  • Check VIP and SSC for registration holds
    • On VIP Choose academics, then SHOW ME registration eligibility for the May/Summer I 2013 term. To have holds cleared, you must contact the department who placed the hold.
    • On SSC (my.sc.edu) Choose SSC from the left side of your screen. Log in using your VIP ID and password. Select student, then registration, and registration status. To have holds cleared, you must contact the department who placed the hold.
  • When creating your schedule, make sure that you read the course notes. If you register for a course in which you have not satisfied the prerequisite/co-requisites, you will be removed.
  • The maximum number of hours you are allowed to register for during the Maymester/Summer term is 6. The maximum number of hours you are allowed to register for during the Fall 2013 term is 16. VIP and SSC will prevent you from registering for more than the maximum number.
  • Check for overlapping times. If courses overlap only by a few minutes, VIP may still let you register. Make sure to check your graphical schedule on VIP for any overlaps. SSC will not allow you to register for overlapping times.
    WARNING: Students opting to proceed with an overlapping time conflict will be charged with an honor code violation.
