Ramsar Convention on Wetlands

Survey of Select African Sites Listed as
Wetlands of International Importance
October 2008

Greetings! This is a continuing a survey of sites in Africa designated as Wetlands of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. The survey seeks to identify the effects of this designation on sites, and we would appreciate your participation in this on-going study.

Please note that this research is continuing, and we therefore invite responses to this survey from any Ramsar-designated Wetland of International Importance in Africa. Preliminary findings based on submissions made before summer 2008 have been assessed and an article is forthcoming that reflects those findings in the Georgetown International Environmental Law Journal. However, the authors are engaged in continuing research and invite you to use this portal to submit information any time before, during or after the Tenth Conference of the Parties in Changwon, Korea during October-November 2008.

The questions are based on surveys administered by the United States National Ramsar Committee and Environment Canada - Canadian Wildlife Service in their respective countries.

Should you have questions about this survey, please contact either:

  • Abou Bamba, Senior Advisor for Africa, bamba@ramsar.org
  • Professor Royal C. Gardner, gardner@law.stetson.edu
  • Professor Kim Diana Connolly, connolly@sc.edu
